What Will Happen When Your Death Is The Least-Expensive “Treatment” Available?

Imagine that you’re suffering from a severe illness. Without the proper treatment, you might not live longer than 6 months. The situation is grim but there’s real hope. The treatment is very expensive but there’s a decent chance of success–taking the right medications could add years to your life.  You want more time and you’ll do what you have to to get it.

Now, imagine that you live in a state where Doctor Prescribed Suicide is Legal.  In, fact “death with dignity” is widely viewed as one of many acceptable methods of “treating” so-called “terminal” conditions.  It’s a very cheap option $100, $50, maybe less.  The proper, life-extending treatment of your illness might cost thousands each year, maybe each month; Doctor Prescribed Suicide is a one-time expense.

Perhaps you have private insurance; is a profit-driven company more likely to pay for the effective option or the cheap one?  Perhaps you are on a government health-insurance program; is an anonymous government bureaucrat going to care more about your time with friends and family or his agency’s cost-containment goals?

If your death is the least expensive option what are they going to pay for?

Think the question is ridiculous?  Ask Barbara Wagner, from Oregon if it can happen.
